A newly created position, responsible to the Technical Director in support of the Company's strategy at the time to extend its manufacturing capability into the Aerospace and Power Generation marketplace.
· Development of casting methods for compressor vane segments to replace forged/welded assemblies
· Improving the fundamentals of casting methods
Centaur Precision (Sheffield, UK) Jun 1993 - Feb 1997
Technical Sales Engineer then Manufacturing Engineering Manager
Initially reporting to the Sales Manager, providing technical support, account development and customer liaison, worldwide with purchasing, design and manufacturing representatives of Centaur's aerospace, automotive and orthopaedic customers. Subsequently, Crispin was promoted to Engineering Manager with responsibility for methods, quality, tool-making and dimensional engineering.
· Won a substantial export contract for military aircraft engine components
· Development of a wide range of technically complex and demanding aerospace projects and short lead-time automotive components
Rolls-Royce (Derby, UK) Sept 1990 - Jun 1993
Teaching Company Associate then Capital Equipment Project Co-ordinator
The Teaching Company Scheme was based in the Material and Process Technology section of Rolls-Royce's Materials Research Establishment in Derby and was directed towards an improved understanding of the process used to manufacture directionally solidified single crystal components. As Capital Equipment Project Co-ordinator, Crispin held responsibility to project manage the long-term capital investment strategy for Rolls-Royce's precision casting operations; including construction of the strategy and cost and benefit analysis through to acquisition of capital equipment.
· A paper based on the Teaching Company programme was presented at the Solidification Processing '97 Conference, Ranmoor House, Sheffield University, July 1997
· Methods were developed that were forecast to significantly reduce single crystal rejection rates and improve material utilisation simultaneously
